CTC Skills USA wins Silver Medal at Nationals for Oxbow Meadows Sensory Garden
Columbus Technical College Students participating on the Skills USA Community Service Team designed a Sensory Garden at Oxbow Meadows. Plants were chosen to appeal to smell and touch as well as sight. On February 18, 2012, they helped children with autism plant the garden. Their hard work paid off when they attended the Skills USA National competition held in Kansas City this June. They brought a notebook reporting on their project and made a presentation to a panel of judges that was recognized with the Silver Medal. Congratulations! Our families thank you for providing a way to include our children.
Hope for Autism Walk 2012
Saturday May 12
Over 100 people braved threatening skies to attend the Autism Walk, and were rewarded by good weather and fun. Diane Pope - President of the Autism Hope Center - opened ceremonies with an invocation by Dr. Mike Knowles, Pastor of Waldrop Memorial Baptist Church and then Debbie Anderson sang the Star-Spangled Banner. People with autism took turns leading the walk by carrying the AHC banner followed by walkers including the Springer Academy stilt walkers. The children’s activity area and face painting were popular attractions. Representatives of Columbus Speech and Hearing, Easter Seals, Muscogee Sports and Phenix City TaeKwonDo Academy answered questions while attendees enjoyed pizza donated by Papa John’s. When you patronize our sponsors and supporters be sure to thank them for their contributions to our programs.
